"The unexamined life is not worth living." -- Socrates

At nearly every university in the world, teachers believe that one of our duties is to get our students to question and explore. We want our students to develop questioning minds. To have a successful life we must understand deeply the knowledge we have and be aware of what we are ignorant. Most of the time, we focus on learning more about things we already know. But how many of us spend time much thinking about the things we do not know?

That may seem like a challenge. How can you be aware of things you don't know? There is an old saying that goes, "The more you learn, the more you realize how little you know." But in the Socrates quote above, his meaning is not just to gain more knowledge, but to examine the many things we "think" we know. A big problem in life is thinking you know something, only to discover that you were misinformed.

Let me present one simple example. In Japan it is rather commonplace to believe that a person's blood type is a general guide to the type of person they are. I have had many people explain to me in great detail the personality of A-blood type and how a B-blood type personality is very different. I have asked many people if blood type indicates personality type, and nearly everyone, including highly educated persons, have told me that it is true. Not only do they think it is true, they will often tell me how they have experienced this phenomenon. So I ask them, do you think there is research that has found this to be true? Most people say they have never heard of any research on this topic. Some laugh at the idea of research on such a simple topic. Others just say, "everyone knows that this is so." If so many people share this belief, then it must be true, right?

In fact, there actually are research studies on blood-type and personality. I have read many of them. There are studies dating back more than 50 years ago, as well as recent studies. There are studies of populations all over the world. All of these studies have found no relationship between personality and blood type. Not even one. There is no evidence that blood-type has any influence on personality or behavior. Yet when I challenge people about this belief, they rarely think to go to the library or the Internet and find out for themselves.

If we reverse Socrates famous saying, it might come out like this, "there is no real life without examination."
